Van Loveren Estate is geen onbekende maar de naam Tangled Tree is nieuw. Deze Zuid Afrikaanse wijn uit het Cape Floral Kingdom wordt met zorg en respect voor de natuur gemaakt.
Ik wist even niet wat ik moest denken van de flessen van Tangled Tree. Het zijn namelijk PET-flessen. Plastic dus. En plastic is niet goed voor het milieu. Blijkbaar denken ze daar bij Tangled Tree anders over. Kijk, glas is ook niet geweldig maar voorlopig is er geen statiegeld op PET-flessen en dan ben je er dus niet zeker van dat mensen dit netjes zullen scheiden in het afval. Maar voordeel is wel dat je geen lawaai staat te maken bij de glasbak. Toch voelt het niet lekker zo’n plastic fles. Gek is dat. Gewoon een kwestie van wennen misschien?
Feit is dat men op het Van Loveren Estate er alles aan doet om een uniek stukje natuur echt uniek te houden dus ze zullen er vast wel heel goed over nagedacht hebben want natuur is over de hele wereld belangrijk.
Wij proefden de Tropical Sauvignon Blanc. De naam doet vermoeden dat de tropische geuren uit het glas omhoog springen. Maar dat doen ze niet. Het is een zachte en lichte wijn die vast en zeker door iedereen lekker gevonden wordt. Een echte allemansvriend die je in ieder gezelschap en op ieder moment kunt schenken.
Ik vond hem verrassend fris en zacht zonder echt uitgesproken geur of smaak. Een wijn om altijd in huis te hebben en voor de prijs hoef je dat niet te laten. Als ik een restaurant had dan zou het vanaf vandaag mijn huiswijn worden.

Hi there, I am Malcolm Human, asst winemaker of Van Loveren.
Thank you very much for taking the time to taste our wine and mostly for the valuable comments.
If I may describe the philosophy of the Tangled Tree range; Van Loveren is a proud Family Owned Winery, in fact the Biggest Privately Owned winery in South Africa. Because the farm is the legacy they will leave for future generations of the Retief family, we would like to ensure the sustainability of the farm by minimalizing environmental impact where we can.
A little more than 1 year ago we launched the Tangled Tree range of wines with the motto:”a little greener every day”. As you mentioned the bottle is made from PET. The environmental benefits from the use of PET , for me, is mainly that it has a considerably lower carbon footprint. Starting at manufacture, through to transport and eventually recycling these bottles just use less energy. For example: A typical light weight glass bottle will be in the region of 220-250g where a PET bottle weighs a mere 50g. Therefore on transport alone we can load 40% more wine on a truck for transport.
The Labels on the bottle is made from the agricultural waste of sugar cane production (bagasse) rather than from wood fibers that come from trees. Even though the paper industry is very well regulated and very sustainable we like to think that using the residue/leftovers/waste from another agricultural crop fits very well with our philosophy.
The cartons are made from 80% recycled paper.
The wines are light on the environment, light on the pocket and very easy to drink. Wines for truly any occasion, from picnic’s to hiking even as a everyday house wine in the fridge! (maybe another advantage to the PET Bottle is that you can fit more bottles in the door of the fridge because the bottles are narrower)
